Don’t want to hijack thread but thought I would post here as it’s relevant. I’m awaiting surgeon for ACL reconstruction which has a slight tear and cartilage trim, it’s about 6 weeks away. I’m trying to strengthened lower body to hopefully give me a head start to rehabilitation. I was wondering if by squating I could possibly do more harm than good? Is there any exercises I should be focusing on to aid recovery.
Thanks for any help.
You shouldn’t do anymore harm to the ACL anyway!
(No rotation etc)In general it depends on the degree of damage to the meniscus – but you should be fine – if there is pain stop of course.
You could always use machinces if you wnated to be very careful

Oh apologies – it’s a slight tear in the ACL.
In that case be a little more careful, use spotters etc.May 13, 2009 at 5:17 pm #25124fergusGuest@robbo90 1633 wrote:
Well its been a while between posts, still waiting for my next surgery however, I’m almost at the stage where I’m thinking of abondoning the surgery and spending the next 6 months fully strengthening my left knee and surrounding muscles.
My surgeon here in Ireland seems to be having trouble with the equipment used on my last ACL recon and this is slowing proceedings down. I’m able now to squat- nothing too heavy yet though, and my conditioning has improved in the last 3 weeks from cycling and straight line running and DB circuit work-carefully. How would you guys target strengthening an ACL, thats not fully gone but fairly close, as in exercises and intensity.
I’m still hoping to play footy from Dec onwards and because of this my physio is leaning towards getting the surgery done for life after rugby and another couple of years playing.
Cheers for your thoughts and views fella’s…
Don’t quite understand the bolded part mate …
I would keep strengthening it but avoid rotational work for now, strengthen the hamstrings primarily and develop ankle and hip mobility.
This will bring you on a bit
May 15, 2009 at 1:25 pm #25128robbo90GuestIve changed surgeons since my meniscus surgery back in March. I’ve been put onto this new surgeon thru my club (costs and closer to home as opposed to getting it done in Dublin you know) who’s worried if He opens me up he could discover he’s not the right equipment.
We’ve had to email back to NZ from my 1st recon and make sure it all matches for Ireland. Have a meeting today with Him so hopefully it’ll be all good. Had my physio really stress about playing future etc if I don’t have the recon so we’ll see what Surgeon says and decide from there.

Closer to home? You’re kidding me! Sure Dublin and Meath are in all the one county at this stage mate!
Is somewhere like the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry not close enough?
I don’t know many experienced Physio’s in Meath. (I know some poor ones though!)
Personally, I’d see if the club would arrange for you to go and see Ger Hartmann in Limerick for a consultation before you do anything.
May 27, 2009 at 9:32 am #25129robbo90GuestHa, there’s not very many Dubliners/Meath men too happy about that comment….
So after the meeting with surgeon and the possibility of him using a graft from the states due to my screws being at awkward angles, I’ve decided to flag surgery ( for now anyways) and strengthen the knee, possibly stepping back from playing now and concentrate on my coaching. Would you steer clear of walking with a weighted sled to strengthen, and is there any other exercises you’d stay away from???
May 28, 2009 at 3:29 pm #25116lloydyGuestThanks for the advice fellas, I go in tomorrow for surgery, very happy that’s it’s so soon. Then the long road of rehab can begin!
Hopefully I’ll be assigned a physio to keep me on track. I’ve been doing a bit of research so I’ve got a general idea of what to expect.
