Ashley Jones Crusaders Head Strength Coach - Super RugbyI was chatting with a power lifting mate of mine, Steve Thompson, of GetStrength, and he re-opened my eyes to an old school competition preparation plan that I am sure you have used or read about. It is an increasing intensity decreasing volume plan to have you ready for a competition in 12 weeks. With the range of new programs out there many of us may have moved away from the grass roots, to trial other programs, but every once in a while … [Read more...] about Twelve Week Challenge – Old School Style

Author Ashley Jones From reading various posts over the last few weeks I thought I would add this to the mix for comment and consideration, an attempt to train at various positions along the force velocity continuum to ensure that all aspects of strength are trained concurrently, particularly in light of posts in reference to post activation potentiation and the development of lower body power and strength. … [Read more...] about Program variations – Ashley Jones

Ash, I'm a tight forward and have really got into Olympic lifts, squat options, power work this season after reading your articles, your advice has been a great help. I've been performing 2 workouts a week during the season, a full body strength and power. The strength was Olympic, squat, lower back/hamstring, upper body push and upper body pull. The sets and reps were rotated, wk 1 - 4x6, wk 2 - 2x5, 3x3, wk 3 - 6x3. Power was squat, Olympic movement and upper body push at a 3x5, 5x3 alternate … [Read more...] about Off Season Program

I am a 19 year old going into my second season of competitive University rugby and I play hooker for my universities 1st team, i am quite short at 5 ft 9and 90 kg's. Due to my size i am reasonably quick as i used to play backrow and have good aerobic ability scoring around 13.4-7 on the beep test. I have been following an off season programme that involved periods of hypertrophy, strength and power. My training week has been four weight training sessions two upper body, two lower body focusing … [Read more...] about Hooker pre-season training?

Using all Three of the Competitive Weight Training Techniques Rugby-Training System

By Ashley Jones Have you wondered like I have if you can combine all the elements you love into one integrated training system. Yes, I think you can. I believe that each of the above lend themselves ideally to a prioritisation system throughout the year, I do not believe that you should drop off one aspect of your training completely and agree with the concurrent system style that you train all variables at the one time. So to this end may I offer you a year round system to touch all … [Read more...] about Using all Three of the Competitive Weight Training Techniques Rugby-Training System

Back to the bar, strength training for masters Here we go again a new training year and to be honest 2016 was going to be my last year. I was inspired to keep going by a follow masters lifter Geoffrey Lewis Australia,  who started lifting at 61 years of age and is now 68 and still improving. The Asia/Oceania champs 2016 certainly was one of the worst training cycles I'd had and wasn't expecting a great day. I had to take my own advise and try and get the best out of myself on the day (you can … [Read more...] about Back to the bar, strength training for masters – Kevin Strachan

Strength Training Programs

Hey Ashley, Really appreciate the site, it's nice to find somewhere with alot of rugby related training info. Anywho, I play rugby (back row) for my Medical School here in the U.K. and we've just moved into sevens season, training on Wednesdays and tournaments on Saturdays. I was wondering what your ideas were on sevens specific strength and conditioning, and whether they differ from your approach to 15's training. How many weights session would you recommend per week, and would you incorporate … [Read more...] about Sevens specific strength and conditioning

Hi everyone, well the wilds of Hokkaido have been good for me, and yes when you read running I was actually running, and today i feel like i was hit by a truck on the way home, do not know if I will ever enjoy it as much as lifting Chris and Lou but I may pen a new adage, "lift for my head and run for my heart" cheers, ash … [Read more...] about Week 4 – Counterbalanced Program
