Firstly let me start this article with a statement of philosophy, I believe we try and include way too many exercises in our training programs, I have been as guilty as the next trainer in doing this and believe we need to pull back but also increase the stimulus by increasing the overall number of sets that the organism is exposed to, hence the value of wave loading in the strength & power training of athletes and anyone for that matter.   Now there is nothing new in what I am … [Read more...] about Wave Goodbye to Strength Plateaus By Ashley Jones

Ashley Jones Strength Conditioning Coach Forget the complicated spilt training programs, forget the long workouts, you need a program that will get you stronger and will probably get you faster as a by product and you are not a professional so you only want to train 2 or 3 times a week. You can even do this in a home/garage gym if you set it up correctly and organize a few of your mates to help out. Quite simply you use the exercises that deliver the most effect for your time, these … [Read more...] about Off Season Strength Training for Club Rugby

Strength Training Programs

Well I have had quite a few evenings with nothing but Japanese TV for company so I have dug through some archives, re-read Leo Costs`s Big Beyond Belief book of the early 90`s which used the Bulgaian weightlifting training model applied to hypertrophy and strength training well worth a read, also looked at Charles Poliquin`s work on two a day training for the same body part, and this is what I have come up with as the final instalment in my Pencil to Crayon training programs, shall trial it and … [Read more...] about The Pencil Files Complete (final)

Ok then team here we go as threatened Day 1 Week 1 This is the program I'm using as we have limited equipment here at the GS factory, very basic just a bar, weights and a squat/bench rack. I would love to be training in the Getstrength Gym but with a 180km round trip it doesn't make it practical. In saying that, I would be doing mainly bar in hand work anyway and there aren't to many Gym's that don't have bars, weights and squat/bench racks or two so hopefully this program will translate to … [Read more...] about HOW NOT TO KILL YOURSELF ( STRENGTH TRAINING FOR MASTERS) Day 1 Week 1

Off Season Training Plans - As another ITM Cup closes with a wonderful record-setting Off Season Training Plans Ashley Jones As another ITM Cup closes with a wonderful record-setting 5th title in a row to the Canterbury team, players, trainers and coaches minds will start turning to prepare for next season. Personally, I believe that a player needs about 2 weeks off physically but 4 to 6 weeks off mentally from the rigours of the game. Whatever time you have you can plan the work around your … [Read more...] about Off Season Training Plans

With summer only around the corner in New Zealand, I thought I would pull this great boxing routine out of the archives. Designed by Ashley Jones who at the time was the Crusaders Strength Conditioning Coach. This is a grueling session but what a great way to drop some body fat and get fit for the long hot summer ahead. Enjoy Steve Thompson Boxing Session Warm up 60 seconds each Overs/Unders/Hooks then swap with partner then L jab for 30 secs then R jab for 30 secs then … [Read more...] about Summer Boxing Routine

Strength & Power Continuum Training Ashley Jones Introduction Following on from some discussions I had with colleagues in the Northern Hemisphere during the Wallaby Spring Tour I though I would re-visit some strength programming concepts to cover all my bases on the Strength/Power continuum in each workout that I program.   Qualities The key areas that I feel need to be addressed in a workout structured in a way to stimulate all aspect of the force velocity curve are as … [Read more...] about Strength & Power Continuum Training – Ashley Jones
