Periodisation for the Northern Hemisphere Season, Part 1 – Tom Mclaughlin
Author Tom Mclaughlin Unlike the majority of articles on this site, the following review looks at how to plan and periodise strength & conditioning over a 9 month period. Here in England (UK) the competitive period will begin on the first weekend in September and could potentially run all the way through to the last weekend in May. This period could also consist of the team competing in 3 major competitions; the Guinness Premiership, the Heineken Cup and the EDF Cup. Planning and delivering … [Read more...] about Periodisation for the Northern Hemisphere Season, Part 1 – Tom Mclaughlin
Wave Goodbye to Strength Plateaus By Ashley Jones
Firstly let me start this article with a statement of philosophy, I believe we try and include way too many exercises in our training programs, I have been as guilty as the next trainer in doing this and believe we need to pull back but also increase the stimulus by increasing the overall number of sets that the organism is exposed to, hence the value of wave loading in the strength & power training of athletes and anyone for that matter. Now there is nothing new in what I am … [Read more...] about Wave Goodbye to Strength Plateaus By Ashley Jones
We don’t leave anyone behind- PART 1 – CULTURE By John Rahme
Driving back into the city of Sydney after watching a game of rugby league with two good friends of mine and one of their friends whom I just met and seemed to be a really nice quite softly spoken fellow. We enter a surrounding suburb called Surry hills only 5 minutes away from the heart of Sydney, arriving at our destination. We were planning on having a couple of beers, well they were, and then head home. We arrive at the front of the establishment, there is no parking close by. I drive back … [Read more...] about We don’t leave anyone behind- PART 1 – CULTURE By John Rahme
Off Season Strength Training for Club Rugby
Ashley Jones Strength Conditioning Coach Forget the complicated spilt training programs, forget the long workouts, you need a program that will get you stronger and will probably get you faster as a by product and you are not a professional so you only want to train 2 or 3 times a week. You can even do this in a home/garage gym if you set it up correctly and organize a few of your mates to help out. Quite simply you use the exercises that deliver the most effect for your time, these … [Read more...] about Off Season Strength Training for Club Rugby
The Holy Grail Grail – Damian Marsh
The search for the perfect program. It is a romance that I will take to my grave. Years of reading, watching, doing and asking, yet I am no closer to the strength man’s Holy Grail. What would it look like? What would it entail? Basic compound movements? Surely. It would probably start with an athletic powerful movement. Something like a power clean I’m sure. Something that expresses strength and power in equal servings. Next would be a heavy movement for the legs. We … [Read more...] about The Holy Grail Grail – Damian Marsh

A Day in the Life of a Strength & Conditioning Coach – Off Season Ashley Jones For those of you that are contemplating a career in this line of work I though it may be an opportune time to outline a typical day so you can see what goes on. HOW NOT TO KILL YOURSELF ( STRENGTH TRAINING FOR MASTERS) Day 1 Week 1
Ok then team here we go as threatened Day 1 Week 1 This is the program I'm using as we have limited equipment here at the GS factory, very basic just a bar, weights and a squat/bench rack. I would love to be training in the Getstrength Gym but with a 180km round trip it doesn't make it practical. In saying that, I would be doing mainly bar in hand work anyway and there aren't to many Gym's that don't have bars, weights and squat/bench racks or two so hopefully this program will translate to … [Read more...] about HOW NOT TO KILL YOURSELF ( STRENGTH TRAINING FOR MASTERS) Day 1 Week 1
